Jealousy. Betrayal. Corruption. The Spelling Bee is a Macbeth-inspired dark comedy, detailing the downfall of protagonist Grace. Grace - severely dyslexic, shy and consumed by her insecurities - she constantly lives in the shadow of best friend Jess. Jess is a star, glowing with confidence; she’s funny, popular and unlike Grace, is a excellent at spelling.
Grace has always been quiet about her desire to win the spelling bee - until a mysterious man appears in her life. George, a theatrical and animated new student, fixates on the idea of Grace winning the spelling bee. It is soon revealed through a series of events that George is in fact Satan in disguise, and has become set on taking Grace’s soul, using the competition as a way to obtain it.
Grace goes on a journey, once she is pushed to sell her soul - she finally becomes the confident person she’s always wanted to be. However, this comes at a price as she must betray her closest ally to get a glimpse of victory. Though these few fleeting moments of glory taste delicious, Grace soon realises she must take responsibility for all the harm she’s caused - learning that though winning can be a glorious triumph, it can be lonely at the top.
This will be a fun and project captured with an 1980’s visual style. An eighties game show, musical number and superhero spelling bee scenes, laced with satire and flair. The whole concept is soaked in melodrama - ridiculously over the top.
